Waste Processing Vessel as an Innovative Solution for Coastal and Archipelagic Areas

BRIN, through its Research Center for Hydrodynamics Technology, is developing a waste processing vessel as an integrated waste management solution for coastal areas and small islands. This innovation addresses the complex waste issues originating from domestic activities, tourism, and marine debris transported from the mainland, particularly in regions such as the Thousand Islands where land availability is limited. Compared to conventional methods such as incinerators or land-based systems, this vessel offers a more flexible approach by processing waste directly on-site without requiring additional land space.

In addition to environmental benefits, this innovation also presents significant economic and social potential. Local waste processing can reduce logistics costs, create job opportunities, and promote the development of a circular economy. Public acceptance of this technology is relatively high, provided that adequate education is ensured, operations do not disrupt community activities, and integration with existing waste management systems is maintained. Moving forward, cross-sector collaboration is expected to accelerate the implementation of this waste processing vessel as a sustainable solution that supports climate change mitigation and improves the quality of life in coastal communities.
