Pertamina Group has reached a significant milestone with the inaugural shipment of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) made from Used Cooking Oil (UCO) from the Cilacap Refinery for the Jakarta-Denpasar route, using Pelita Air Services aircraft. This SAF is produced through a Co-Processing technology with domestically developed Katalis Merah Putih, capable of processing UCO up to 2.5-3% and reducing carbon emissions by up to 84% compared to conventional jet fuel. Pertamina is the only SAF Co-Processing producer in ASEAN certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), with a strategy to expand the SAF ecosystem by involving the public in UCO collection, strengthening the domestic market, and targeting export opportunities.
Looking ahead, Pertamina Patra Niaga is ready to widely market SAF, while KPI targets an initial capacity of 9 MB with a follow-up shipment of 1.7 million liters to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Pertamina’s SAF product meets international standards ASTM D1655 and Def Stan 91-091, making it the first officially certified SAF in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Despite its promising outlook, SAF still faces challenges such as limited feedstock availability and low airline involvement at the global scale, as seen in other producers like World Energy in the US. Pertamina remains optimistic that SAF will become a strategic solution for sustainable aviation, aligned with national decarbonization and energy independence goals.
