Aviation Industry Responds to Carbon Reduction Goals: China Airlines and EVA Air Sign Agreements to Adopt Sustainable Aviation Fuel

To promote the trial implementation of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation has initiated a pilot program. In response, China Airlines and EVA Air have announced the signing of SAF procurement agreements. China Airlines is partnering with Formosa Petrochemical Corporation to use domestically produced SAF on flights departing from Taoyuan, with a planned purchase of over 2,500 tons this year, estimated to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 6,500 tons. The airline will also sign a memorandum of understanding to purchase more than 10,000 tons over the next three years. EVA Air has signed agreements with three SAF suppliers: Associated Energy Group (USA), COSMO Oil Marketing (Japan), and Formosa Petrochemical (Taiwan), demonstrating a firm commitment to net-zero emissions. The airline will gradually adopt regular SAF usage on routes in North America, Japan, and Taiwan.
Both China Airlines and EVA Air have responded to the Civil Aeronautics Administration’s SAF pilot program by using SAF certified under the international ISCC CORSIA standard in two flights—CI839 from Kaohsiung to Bangkok and CI220 from Taipei Songshan to Tokyo Haneda—each containing 40% SAF. This resulted in a single-trip carbon reduction of 26.7 tons, the highest usage among participating Taiwanese carriers. On the same day, Taoyuan, Songshan, and Kaohsiung airports simultaneously conducted their first SAF refueling, marking a significant milestone in Taiwan’s aviation sector toward carbon reduction and the development of a domestic SAF supply system.
