BRIN, through the Research Center for Oceanography, is collaborating with PT. Harapan Interaksi Swadaya (Greenhope) to study environmentally friendly solutions based on oxium technology since June 2024. This research focuses on the potential of oxium in supporting the biodegradation of plastic by marine microorganisms, as well as identifying superior microbes to tackle microplastic pollution.
Greenhope, a bioplastic technology company, supports this innovation to help reduce plastic waste. Their collaboration includes the preparation of legal documents, report evaluations, and the planning of continued research activities in 2025.
Throughout 2024, they have conducted biodegradation experiments, plastic degradation rate comparisons, and toxicity tests, which will be compiled into scientific publications. This collaboration is expected to bring positive impacts in addressing marine plastic pollution — a serious problem that continues to worsen due to increasing global plastic production.
