BRIN Introduces Research on Waste Management to Surabaya City Government

BRIN presented its research results on waste management, biosaline rice development, and mangrove utilization to the Surabaya City Government during a meeting at the Surabaya Mangove Botanical Garden. BRIN Deputy Head, Amarulla Octavian, emphasized the importance of synergy between BRIN and the city government to maximize the benefits of mangrove ecosystems, not only for conservation and tourism but also for applying BRIN’s research outputs. Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi welcomed the initiative, expressing readliness to support mangrove route development, environmentally friendly transport solutions, and biosaline rice cultivation. BRIN also highlighted the need for collaboration between government, researchers, industry, and active involvement of youth in waste management efforts.
In addition, BRIN researchers pointed out the international potential of the Surabaya Mangrove Botanical Garden to join global conservation networks. The discussion also highlighted the promise of biosaline rice cultivation in mangrove areas as a strategic innovation for strengthening food security while protecting ecosystems. With support from the Surabaya City Government and opportunities for international collaboration, the Surabaya Mangrove Botanical Garden is expected to become a national and regional model, integrating waste management, environmental conservation, and food innovation through research, technology, and community participation.
