The National Researach and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is promoting waste management using Fast Pyrolysis technology as a solution to convert plastic waste into environmentally friendly alternative fuel. During the 2025 Research Results Dissemination event in Yogyakarta, BRIN’s Board Member Tri Mumpuni Wiyatno emphasized that waste management is not just about technology, but also about fostering public awareness and driving social reconstruction. She cited the successful example of residual waste processing in Semarang and community circular economy initiatives in Ciamis, where waste banks combined with maggot farming have generated income of up to IDR 24 million per production cycle. BRIN also expressed its readliness to support operator training to enable independent and sustainable community waste management.
The Yogyakarta City Government welcomed BRIN’s support amid daily waste production reaching 300 tons and limited waste processing land. Through the MasJos program (Masyarakat Jogja Olah Sampah), the local government encourages residents to sort and process waste from home. Mayor Hasto Wardoyo stressed that changing public behavior is key to success and introduced initiatives such as the “Jurus Ember” (Bucket Strategy) and the TRC MasJos (Rapid Response Team) for managing household and bulky waste. The dissemination event is expected to be a first step in developing evidence-based public policies for waste management and aleternative energy, fostering a clean, innovative, and competitive Yogyakarta through synergy between BRIN and the city government.
