The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), through its Organization for Energy and Manufacturing Research (OREM), continues to promote the use of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology to convert wastem heat from industrial sectors, waste incinerators, and low-enthalpy geothermal sources into environmentally friendly electricity. In a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) titled Technology Co-Development, BRIN collaborated with the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) and industry partners to build research-to-commercialization partnerships. ORC technology is considered efficient, flexible, and holds significant potential to reduce dependence on imported technology, particularly for small to medium-scale power systems. The head of OREM emphasized the importance of collaboration based on the real industrial needs to ensure research outputs are practical and impactful.

This FGD marked a concrete step in fostering a clean energy innovation ecosystem that supports industrial decarbonization and Indonesia’s 2060 Net Zero Emission target. LPDP opened co-funding opportunities to accelerate technology adoption, while industry partners such as PT Bumiresik Nusantara Raya shared their long-standing research efforts dating back to the 2008 Bandung waste crisis. Their work includes the PSEL-ORC mini power plant project. BRIN believes that the co-development approach is essential to bridge the gap between laboratory research and real-world solutions that enhance industrial competitiveness and energy sustainability nationwide.
