BRIN Promotes the Downstreaming of Solar-Powered Electric Boats to Strengthen the Small-Scale Fishermen Ecosystem

BRIN, in collaboration with UNDP and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), launched the SeaBLUE project to support small-scale fishermen through the development of a solar-powered electric boat ecosystem. This innovation was inaugurated at the Eco-Friendly Electric Boat Innovation Expo on Tunda Island, Banten, and aims to reduce fishermen’s dependence on fossil fuels while supporting the transition to clean energy. In addition, BRIN has signed an MoU with PT Giga Inovasi Nasional to accelerate the downstreaming of electric outboard motor technology as a tangible application of research results that directly benefit society.
Through multi-stakeholder collaboration, including local governments and universities, the project targets the distribution of 162 solar-powered cooler boxes and 6 electric boats across 34 villages in Morotai and the Tanimbar Islands. BRIN hopes that this initiative will become a model for sustainable water transportation, especially in the 3T regions (frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped). This technology not only helps improve the welfare of fishermen but also strengthens Indonesia’s commitment to sustainable development and eco-friendly innovation.
