Cassava-Based Bioliner: An Eco-Friendly Alternative for Landfill Waste Management

Cassava starch-based bioliner technology is seen as a promising innovative solution for waste management at Final Processing Sites (TPA), serving as an alternative to soil cover in the controlled landfill method. Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono stated that the government is open to adopting environmentally friendly technologies that can reduce operational costs and odor pollution at landfills. With micro-pores measuring approximately 8 microns, the bioliner can effectively cover waste without the need for heavy machinery, preventing foul odors and microplastic contamination. It also helps preserve landfill space, extending the site’s operational lifespan.
This innovation aligns with Law No. 18 of 2008, which prohibits open dumping practices and mandates the transition to more environmentally sound waste management methods. It is also supported by Ministerial Regulation No. 03/PRT/M/2013. While the government support such solutions, it stresses the importance of caution before wide-scale implementation. Greenhope’s CEO expressed hope for government support to promote the bioliner to local governments. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment and BPLH emphasized the need for third-party testing to ensure the bioliner’s safety and long-term environmental viability.
