BRIN, through its Organization for Energy and Manufacturing Research (OREM), has develop Fast Pyrolysis 5.0 technology to convert plastic waste into a liquid fuel called Petasol. This initiative is carried out in collaboration with the Semarang City Government and the Provincial Government of Central Java. The technology is seen as a sustainable solution to the plastic waste problem while also providing an alternative energy source for fisherman and farmers. Its implementation in Semarang serves as a model for collaborative replication, involving local governments, communities, and associations, with technical support from BRIN.
Petasol produced from this technology has undergone various quality tests and environmental assessments, including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), emission testing, and trials on vehicles and agricultural machinery. BRIN states that Petasol combustion does not generate open-air pollution and has minimal environmental impact. The technology has received copyright and patent registration and is aimed at strengthening downstream innovation at the community level through village waste banks, with the hope of offering a practical and economical solution for coastal and rural communities.
