LCA and Carbon Footprint Become Strategic Instruments Toward Net Zero Emission 2060

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method and carbon footprint calculation are considered essential science-based tools for decision-making to support the Net Zero Emission 2060 target. During a workshop at the Sarwono Prawiroharjo Science and Technology Area (KST) of BRIN, Hismiaty Bahua, a researcher at the Research Center for Sustainable Industrial Systems and Manufacturing (PRSIMB), emphasized the need to shift from intuition-based policies to data-driven approaches. LCA and carbon footprint analysis enable the identification of measurable efficiency and industrial decarbonization opportunities, while helping balance economic growth with emission reduction commitments. She also explained the distinction between Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF), which calculates total company emissions, and Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), which assesses emissions throughout a product’s life cycle.

Hismiaty warned of the risk of carbon tunnel vision if industries focus solely on a single carbon indicator without considering other environmental impacts. Therefore, LCA is necessary to prevent burden shifting and to ensure comprehensive impact evaluation in accordance with ISO standards, which include goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment, and interpretation. The main challenge lies in data collection, particularly primary data across supply chains, prompting industries to prioritize data within their direct control. With the support of LCA software and accurate data, the analysis results can serve as a solid foundation for strategic planning and credible market communication in advancing the national decarbonization agenda.
