Lithium Battery Innovation Based on Local Resources for Energy Independence

BRIN, through its Organization for Nanotechnology and Materials Research (ORNM), has developed Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) secondary batteries by utilizing local raw materials and iron and steel industrial waste as substitutes for commercial materials. In addition, the research explores alternative lithium sources such as seawater and bittern to strengthen the independence of strategic material supply. This approach represents an important step in reducing import dependency while optimizing Indonesia’s domestic resource potential.

The developed batteries demonstrate competitive performance, with a specific capacity of 140–160 mAh/g, a nominal voltage of 3.2 V, high thermal stability, and coulombic efficiency above 95 percent. Prototypes have been produced in cylindrical 18650 cell format and tested on electric bicycles through collaboration with industry and academia. This achievement opens opportunities for implementation in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and supports Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission 2060 target through more reliable renewable energy utilization.
