Managed Waste Share Rises to 25%, Government Targets End of Open Dumping by 2026

Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that the proportion of nationally managed waste increased significantly from 10% in early 2025 to 25% within one year. With daily waste generation reaching 141,000 tons, approximately 35,000 tons per day are now being properly managed. Although this achievement is considered progressive, it remains far below the 2026 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) target of 63%. The government is therefore pushing for the optimization of all available waste management facilities across regions, projecting that the management rate could reach at least 57.3% this year through more active and coordinated operations.
In addition, the government aims to fully eliminate open dumping practices by 2026. Over the past year, open dumping at landfills has decreased by around 30%, although about 66% of the 481 landfills nationwide are still managed openly. Technically, most landfills are expected to reach the end of their operational lifespan by 2028, as the average landfill age is approaching 20 years. The government has designated the next three years as a critical period to accelerate the transformation of Indonesia’s national waste management system.
