Taiwan’s Ministry of Environment has introduced a Lifestyle Carbon Footprint Calculator to provide personalized carbon emission analyses and raise public awareness of sustainable living. The tool allows users to estimate their contributions to global warning based on daily activities such as housing energy use, transportation, and consumer habits. Deputy Minister Shih Wen-chen emphasized that reducing carbon emissions is not just the responsibility of major polluters but requires changes in everyday behavior. For instance, reducing hotel amenity use or opting for public transportation instead of electric cars can significantly lower carbon footprints. The calculator is backed by data from both domestic government agencies and international research institutions.
The calculator covers five key lifestyle areas: residential energy consumption, transportation, food (coming soon), daily goods consumption, and travel & leisure, with housing and transportation being the major contributors. Users can assess their carbon footprint and receive recommendations for emission reduction, such as replacing old refrigerators to save energy. To encourage participation, the government is offering incentives: from March 7 to March 29, users who lo into the Net-Zero Green Life Platform and complete their assessment will be entered into a lottery for 10 million green points, with the first 35 participants each day receiving an extra 10,000 points.
