The Ministry of Environment (MOENV) announced the “Collection Rates of Carbon Fees” on October 21, 2024. The rates will take effect on January 1, 2025, with the following details:
Regular rate: NT$300/ton of CO2e.
Preferential rate A: NT$50/ton of CO2e for compliance with industry-specific designated reduction rates.
Preferential rate B: NT$100/ton of CO2e for compliance with technical benchmark reduction rates.
The carbon fee regulations were promulgated on August 29, 2024, marking the start of the carbon pricing era in Taiwan. Entities subject to carbon fees must calculate their 2025 greenhouse gas emissions and pay fees by May 2026.
The collection of carbon fees aims to incentivize carbon reduction. Entities can apply for preferential rates by proposing and meeting voluntary reduction goals.
MOENV will organize workshops to help entities formulate voluntary reduction plans. The Ministry of Economic Affairs will provide technical consultation and guidance to assist enterprises in applying for voluntary reduction plans and preferential rates.
