The Ministry of the Interior’s National Land Management Agency has completed its carbon inventory of 79 public sewage treatment plants across Taiwan. The results show that the total greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 reached 263,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e), with “purchased electricity” being the largest emission source, accounting for 63.2% of total emissions. The inventory followed the ISO 14064-1 organization-level standard and utilized a smart management cloud platform that automatically collected each plant’s water treatment volumes and electricity usage to calculate emissions—marking a key milestone in institutionalizing carbon reduction in the wastewater sector.

Looking ahead, the National Land Administration plans to replace outdated high-energy-consuming equipment, implement energy-saving and carbon-reduction measures, and introduce AI management and low-energy water treatment technologies to support net-zero targets. At the same time, it will continue promoting household sewage connections to increase the connection rate and reduce methane emissions, contributing to long-term environmental sustainability and overall greenhouse gas reduction goals.
