National Waste Management Target Within 2–3 Years and Implementation Challenges

President Prabowo Subianto has set a target to resolve Indonesia’s national waste problem within two to three years, an ambitious goal that requires accelerated policy implementation and behavioral change at the community level. In response, Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq emphasized that the main challenge lies not only in infrastructure readiness but also in waste management culture. The government is encouraging the practice of waste segregation among communities to reduce processing costs and enhance the economic value of properly sorted waste.
At the same time, the government aims to gradually eliminate open dumping practices and illegal landfills to improve national waste management performance. President Prabowo highlighted the importance of utilizing affordable local technologies by involving universities and research institutions such as the Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional to develop innovative solutions. For regions with high waste volumes, waste-to-energy schemes will remain an option, while for smaller-scale areas, alternative technologies that are more efficient and suitable for local conditions will be explored.
