Promoting Renewable Energy to Address Air Pollution in Jakarta

Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq emphasized that the adoption of renewable energy by the industrial sector is a crucial step in reducing air pollution in Jakarta. With 48 industrial zones in the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek) contributing around 30% of air pollution, major emission sources include activities such as furnaces, boilers, and spray dryers. In addition to encouraging a shift to cleaner energy sources like solar power, the government is also considering relocating industries from Jakarta and its surrounding areas as a long-term solution, although this would require adequate policy support and compensation.
On the other hand, Indonesia’s air quality still exceeds the safe standards set by the World Health Organization, with PM2.5 concentrations reaching six times the recommended limit. Pollution sources are diverse, including forest fires, vehicle emissions, waste burning, as well as industrial activities and coal-fired power plants. To address this issue, the government regularly conducts emission patrols in industrial areas and promotes a gradual energy transition to achieve healthier and more sustainable air quality.
