The Cabinet presented this year's National Sustainable Development Awards to National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech) and Taipei Medical University.
National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech) President Yen Jia-Yush said the school has incorporated sustainable development into its planning, including energy management, greenhouse gas inventory, and sustainability education initiatives. He said the university aims to achieve 50% carbon neutrality by 2030 and 100% by 2049.
The university cut its carbon footprint by 218,913 kg last year, with 96.75% of purchases being eco-friendly and upgraded high-voltage power equipment and air conditioning systems to enhance energy efficiency.
Taipei Medical University Hospital-Shuang Ho also won an award for eco-friendly initiatives, including recycling medical waste into sharps containers and turning medication bottles into trash bags.
Taipei Medical University said it was using energy-efficient equipment, installing solar power systems, and implementing intelligent energy management. The university said it conducts carbon inventories to achieve its net-zero emissions goal.
