Following the nationwide ban on using food waste to feed pigs, Taiwan still faces the challenge of properly handling approximately 500 tons of food waste daily, sparking public concern. Experts emphasize that the most fundamental solution is reducing food waste at the source. However, for unavoidable scarps like peels, bones, and vegetables leaves, individuals can turn to home composting or food waste processors. Home composting focuses on maintaining a proper carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and ensuring good drainage to naturally decompose waste and produce organic fertilizer. While food waste machines offer convenience, some consume large amounts of electricity or harm the environment. Non-electric, naturally decomposing models are recommended as a more eco-friendly alternative.
Maggots have gained popularity for their impressive food waste digestion capabilities, but raising them comes with high entry barriers, strong odors, and suitability concerns for typical households. These larvae grow rapidly under high temperature and humidity but have limited diets. Without proper management, odor issues or larval escapes may occur. However, if the larvae and residual waste can be reused for potted plants or farming, they can contribute to a more complete circular resource system.
