The Indonesia government continues to accelerate the energy transition by promoting the use of new and renewable energy (NRE) such as hydropower, solar, geothermal, and wind energy. By 2025, the share of green energy is targeted to reach 23 percent, in line with the vision of achieving net zero emissions by 2060. The Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming administration is fast-tracking this agenda by inaugurating 37 strategic electricity projects worth IDR 72 trillion, including the Jatigede Hydropower Plant (PLTA) in Sumedang and the Asahan III Hydropower Plant in North Sumatra. These projects not only increase electricity suppy but also reduce carbon emissions by more than 1 million tons of CO2 per year and create job opportunities for thousands of local workers.
Additionally, the Solar Power Plant (PLTS) project in new capital city, Nusantara (IKN), with a capacity of 50 MWac, is a concrete step toward supporting the utilization of 100 percent green energy in IKN. This PLTS can generate 92.8 GWh of clean energy per year and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 44,000 tons per year. PT PLN is committed to managing a reliable electricity infrastructure and optimizing the distribution of electricity from these clean energy projects to support the needs of communities and industries. However, with the current NRE achievement at around 15-16 percent, significant challenges remain in reaching the 23 percent target by 2025.
