BRIN and UK Researchers Collaborate to Address Plastic Waste Issues in Indonesia

  1. The PISCES project (2021-2024), funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), unites Indonesian and UK researchers to tackle plastic waste in Indonesia using a systems-based approach. The project identifies inefficiencies in the plastic lifecycle and provides evidence-based solutions to reduce marine plastic pollution by 70% by 2025, aligning with national targets.

  2. During a December meeting in Banyuwangi, researchers shared findings with local governments and communities in West Bali and East Java. A comprehensive report was also launched, offering a "toolbox" for achieving a circular economy by 2040.

  3. Key contributions from Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), including Professor Muhammad Reza Cordova, emphasize collaboration among government, academia, and industry to address challenges like waste management, law enforcement, and public behavior.

  4. PISCES, supported by BRIN and the UK government, demonstrates the effectiveness of systemic, community-driven solutions and international collaboration, positioning Indonesia to become a global leader in sustainable plastic management. [8]
