The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing organic solar cells (OSC) as a new generation of renewable energy technology that is claimed to be more environmentally friendly, flexible, and low-cost to produce. According to BRIN’s Electronics Research Center scientist Yuliar Firdaus, recent studies show that OSC efficiency can theoretically exceed 22% if surface recombination is suppressed and charge mobility is improved. OSCs use organic materials such as donor polymers and small acceptor molecules to absorb light and generate electricity. This technology is considered superior to conventional silicon-based solar cells, which are rigid, heavy, and require high-temperature manufacturing processes, as OSCs can be fabricated through simple and low-cost printing techniques, are lightweight, flexible, and can be applied to various surfaces, including glass or plastic.

In addition to its high efficiency, OSCs offer broad potential for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and portable electronic devices because their color and transparency can be adjusted. However, several challenges remain, such as long-term stability, scaling up production without performance loss, and the limited availability of low-cost, eco-friendly interlayer materials, BRIN aims to develop this technology into an efficient, stable, low-cost renewable energy source that can be mass-produced in Indonesia, supporting national energy independence and the transition toward a green economy. To achieve this, comprehensive support in facilities and funding from BRIN and the government is essential to enable the research outcomes to be widely implemented in buildings, electronic devices, and national infrastructure.
