The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has developed WoodPlastic, a wood-based bioplastic material made entirely from natural sources without the use of synthetic polymers. This technology utilizes wood powder, bamboo, or rattan that reacts with fatty acids to produce a flexible, water-resistant, and recyclable material—without affecting food security. Its production process is simple and solvent-free, making it more efficient and environmentally friendly.
WoodPlastic offers mechanical strength comparable to industrial plastics such as polyenthylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), and shows potential for use in packaging, textiles, medical products, and automotive interiors. The innovation has secured a patent in France (FR2205776) and has attracted the interest of luxury fashion brands in Europe. BRIN is opening opportunities for industrial collaboration to accelerate the downstream application of this technology as a sustainable material solution, supporting Indonesia’s transition toward a greener and more environmentally friendly industrial sector.
