The Nusantara River Affairs Research Agency (BRUIN) has revealed alarming levels of plastic pollution in Indonesian waters, based on a plastic waste census conducted from 2022 to 2024 across 30 provinces. Research was carried out in 35 rivers, 17 beaches, and 2 mangrove points in 49 districts/cities, with nearly 65% of the areas being river ecosystems. Findings showed no river was free of plastic waste. The most common types (23%) were unbranded packaging such as plastic bags, styrofoam, straws, and fabric. Branded waste included products from Wings (11%), Indofood (9%), Mayora (7%), and Unilever (6%). The top five brands found were Club, Indomie, Le Minerale, SoKlin, and Teh Pucuk Harum. Coordinator Muhammad Kholid Basyaiban warned that plastic pollution doesn’t disappear naturally and poses threats to ecosystems, climate, and health.
