Government Targets September for Large-Scale Civil Servant Relocation to Nusantara

The government of Indonesia plans to relocate several cabinet members to Nusantara, starting as early as July, with a larger wave of relocation in September involving around 12,000 civil servants. Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Abdullah Azwar Anas stated that the government is laying down regulatory groundwork for the relocation process, with a few ministers, including Basuki Hadimuljono, expected to move to the new capital in July.

The relocation process will be staggered, with the first wave September affecting around 11,900 civil servants and certain high-ranking officials from 38 ministries and state institutions. Subsequent waves will involve additional employees. The relocation process is a part of President Joko Widodo’s plan, with the aim to alleviate congestion in Jakarta and promote development in other regions of Indonesia, particularly in East Kalimantan.

The new capital, Nusantara, is expected to span 256,000 hectares and cost nearly Rp 541 trillion to develop. It is considered a significant project of Jokowi presidency, with plans for a presidential decree to officially transfer the administrative designation of the national capital from Jakarta to Nusantara.
