The Ministry of Environment (MOENV), in collaboration with prosecutors, police, and local environmental departments, uncovered a major environmental crime involving the illegal storage and export of over 11,000 metric tons of waste plastics. The task force discovered three facilities in Taoyuan used to abandon waste and conceal exports under false declarations. A total of 11 individuals were indicted, and criminal proceeds of nearly NT$400 million were seized. This case highlights the success of interdepartmental coordination and data tracking through real-time GPS systems in identifying illegal waste disposal activities.
Deputy Minister of Environment Shen Chih-Hsiu emphasized the government’s firm stance against polluters shifting environmental costs to the public. The illegal export of waste will be punished under Article 38 of the Waste Disposal Act with fines up to NT$10 million, while illegal disposal may lead up to five years imprisonment and a NT$15 million fine under Article 46. The MOENV urges property owners to be cautious when leasing facilities and pledges to intensify future crackdowns on environmental crimes using technological tools and cross-agency cooperation.
