The governments of Indonesia and the United Kingdom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Belém, Brazil, to strengthen cooperation in addressing climate change. The MoU was signed by Indonesia’s Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq and the UK’s Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, during the COP30 event. This collaboration affirms both nations commitment to accelerating a transition toward a fair, resilient, and low-carbon economy. The cooperation covers climate change mitigation and adaptation, transparent carbon governance, and the integration of low-emission development policies across all levels of government. Both parties also agreed to establish a Joint Steering Committee (JSC) to ensure coordinated, effective, and sustainable program implementation.
The UK expressed strong interest in working with Indonesia in sectors such as energy, Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU), and the development of a robust carbon market. Meanwhile, Indonesia is focused on developing climate change legislation, biodiversity credits, and facilitating credible international carbon trading through seller-buyer platforms. Minister Hanif stressed that this partnership is not merely symbolic—it will be implemented through knowledge exchange, joint projects, and cross-agency technical training. At COP30, he also announced Indonesia’s carbon transaction target of up to 90 million tons of CO2 equivalent, with an estimated economic value of IDR 15 trillion. This affirms Indonesia’s role as a leader in global climate action and its drive toward an equitable green economy.
