The Secretary General of KLHK, Rosa Vivien Ratnawati, stated that today’s environmental issues are becoming increasingly large and complex, thus requiring a more relevant legal approach. She emphasized that although Law No. 32 of 2009 already has strong provisions in terms of planning and enforcement, the current conditions of climate change and ecological disasters demand a more adaptive legal paradigm. The launch of the book New Legal Paradigm to Address the Climate Crisis by Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative (IOJI) and Indonesia Center for Environmantal Law (ICEL) marks an intial step in responding to this need.
The book proposes six core principles for a new legal paradigm: strong sustainability, ecological primacy, ecological integrity, ecological limits, ecological justice, and ecological democracy, governance & rule of law. These principles place environmental protection on par with or even above economic interests, and emphasize the importance of ecological justice across generations and species. This approach is expected to address today’s environmental challenges through a more just, democratic, and sustainable legal situation.
