Managing Plastic Waste, BRIN and Semarang City Government's Innovation to Realize Energy Security

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), in collaboration with the Semarang City Government, has developed Petasol, a fuel derived from plastic waste, to enhance energy security and support farmers. This eco-friendly alternative fuel is produced using Muktikondensor Pyrolysis Technology, which transforms plastic waste into a diesel-equivalent fuel for agricultural machinery. Researcher Tri Martini Patria from BRIN's Research Centre for Sustainable Production Systems and Life Cycle Assessment, emphasized the importance of this innovation for improving the welfare of farmers, especially in coastal areas.

In addition, the utilization of biomass waste into charcoal briquettes is also a strategic step in supporting the transition to independent and environmentally friendly energy. Briquettes produced from agricultural waste biomass can be an alternative solution for household energy needs, replacing fossil fuels that are more expensive and not environmentally friendly. Nugroho Adi Sasongko, head of BRIN's Research Centre, noted that this integrated approach not only promotes environmental sustainability but also empowers micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), strengthening the community’s economy.
