Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stressed that almost all bottled water companies in Indonesia still rely heavily on groundwater extraction, despite many claiming their products come from “mountain springs.” Hanif reminded the public not to be easily deceived by packaging labels that give the impression of natural spring water. He emphasized that, to date, no bottled water company in Indonesia has sustainably used surface water. According to him, the large-scale exploitation of groundwater is not only unsustainable but also causes severe environmental damage.
Hanif further explained that groundwater is extremely difficult to replenish, requiring decades or even hundreds of years to naturally refill. In this context, he regretted that conservation remains mostly a slogan without concrete corporate action. He underlined the importance of making conservation an integral part of long-term investment strategies, particularly for industries that depend directly on natural resources. He asserted that depleted groundwater is essentially non-renewable, and excessive use poses a serious threat to both environmental sustainability and community well-being.
