The Ministry of Environment is expanding its program encouraging the replacement of old motorcycles with electric vehicles to support Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero goal. Through its matching platform, motorcycle owners who replace vehicles over 10 years old can earn carbon reduction credits, which are purchased by developers required to offset emissions from projects subject to environmental impact assessments. On July 7, 2025, the Southern Taiwan Science Park joined as a carbon credit purchaser, offering NT$2,100 per credit—the highest market rate. When combined with Taiwan’s NT$1,000 air pollution subsidy and NT$300 recycling reward, the total subsidy reaches NT$3,400 per motorcycle, reducing financial pressure while promoting electric vehicles.
Since its launch in 2022, more than 100,000 vehicles have been registered on MOENV’s replacement and offset platform, generating approximately 435,000 metric tons of CO2 reduction credits. The Southern Taiwan Science Park plans to purchase credits from 1,675 motorcycle replacements, cutting an estimated 3,853 metric tons of CO2e and nearly 37 metric tons of air pollutants. With four buyers now on the platform—including the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Hsinchu Science Park, Tainan City Government, and the Southern Taiwan Science Park—the program strengthens both carbon reduction and air quality improvements. MOENV encourages the public to take advantage of this program, noting that 40 development projects already require GHG offsets, ensuring continued demand for carbon credits and advancing Taiwan’s net-zero transition.
