The Provincial Government of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) is currently seeking partners to develop a Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plant as a solution to the growing waste problem at the Kebon Kongok Final Disposal Site (TPA) in West Lombok. NTB Governor Lalu Muhamad Iqbal stated that converting waste into biomass energy is a concrete solution to reduce the mounting piles of waste and optimize the nearly full landfill site. This project has been designated a mid-term regional development priority, with a construction target of one to two years.
The NTB government has allocated two hectares of land for the WtE facility and is tightening waste site regulations in line with national policy, which prohibits the development of new landfills strating in 2030. Kebon Kongok is a regional landfill that has been operating since 1993 and currently receives around 300 tons of waste daily from Mataram City and West Lombok Regency. With the adoption of a sanitary landfill system, converting waste to energy is seen as a strategic move to address environmental challenges and land scarcity in the years ahead.
