The Indonesian government aims to eliminate the country’s waste problem by 2029, as outlined in Presidential Regulation No. 12 of 2025 on the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN). Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that strong collaboration between the central government and all regional leaders is the key to achieving this goal. He emphasized the importance of active involvement from both the public and local governments in waste management, and warned that criminal sanctions may be imposed for violations of waste regulations. For this year, the Ministry of Environment has set national waste resolution target of 51.20%.
During a visit to Banjar Regency in South Kalimantan, Minister Hanif praised the waste management system implemented there, which mirrors practices in developed countries—namely, source-based collection (from households, schools, restaurants) and voluntary drop-off systems by residents. The Sekumpul Waste Bank, which serves 15 villages, was highlighted as a best practice model that should be replicated in other regions. Hanif stressed that public engagement, cost transparency, and strong support from local governments are crutial for reducing the financial burden on the state and accelerating the achievement of national waste management targets.
