Taitung County Council Speaker Hsiu-Hua Wu expressed concern over county officials’ limited knowledge of carbon credits and sequestration, urging the establishment of a “Net-Zero Emissions Ordinance”. She highlighted the importance of the 2050 Net-Zero target, emphasizing its relevance to Taitung as a low-carbon development hub.
Taitung Magistrate Ching-Ling Yao responded that by 2040, the county aims to generate enough power locally—mainly through geothermal, small hydro, and renewable energy sources—to meet household electricity needs.
Environmental Protection Bureau Director Chien-Cheng Kuo reported a 4.8% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions between 2020 and 2022. With forest carbon sequestration exceeding emissions, Taitung achieves a net-negative carbon footprint but remains committed to further efforts, including sustainable initiatives like low-carbon tourism and certified events.
Speaker Wu recommended drafting a “Net-Zero Emissions Ordinance”, enhancing civil servants’ knowledge of net-zero policies, and implementing government energy-saving measures, such as upgrading vehicles and adopting green building practices.
