Taiwan Tech Hosts Taiwan-Indonesia Bilateral “Plastic Waste Management Workshop” to Address Circular Economy Challenges

Taiwan Tech held the “Plastic Waste Management Workshop” from November 18 to 20, bringing together 12 experts from Indonesia’s industry, government, and academia. The event, organized by the Taiwan-Indonesia Science and Technology Innovation Center (TI-STIC), aimed to explore advancements in plastic waste reduction, management, and recycling, fostering bilateral collaboration and addressing sustainability challenges.

Key participants included Dr. Muhammad Reza Cordova, principal research expert at the Oceanographic Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN); Dr. Joddy Arya Laksmono, Head of the Polymer Technology Center at BRIN; Professor Hosta from the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS); Evtriyandani, a researcher from the Indonesian Ministry of Industry; Dr. Maria, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Widya Mandala Catholic University; Director-General Lai Ying-Ying and Section Chief Huang Yu-Jung from Resource Circulation Administration, Ministry of Environment, Taiwan; and other distinguished professors and professionals.

The event attracted approximately 90 participants from Taiwan and other countries, also around 40 attendees from New Southbound countries. It not deepened Taiwan-Indonesia collaboration in plastic waste management but also underscored both nations’ commitment to sustainable development. Through technology sharing and policy alignment, the workshop aimed to promote the shared goal of reducing plastic pollution.

The Indonesia representatives were deeply impressed by Taiwan’s plastic restriction policies, waste plastic management regulations, and plastic recycling technologies, as well as their applications in renewable materials. They commended Taiwan’s progress and expressed optimism about future cooperation in green technology transfer and New Southbound investments.

The “Plastic Waste Management Workshop” not only facilitated extensive exchanges and interactions among Taiwan and Indonesia’s industry, government, and academic sectors but also further strengthened and expanded their cooperation in the field of circular economy. The knowledge and experiences gained during this workshop will create new opportunities for both countries in the field of plastic waste management and contribute to advancing sustainable development across Asia.
