The Indonesian government is developing 33 waste-to-energy (WtE) projects, drawing strong interest from major technology vendors from Japan, Europe, and China. Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Yuliot Tanjung, stated that technology partner identification is underway to ensure efficient implementation. PT Danantara Investment Management will finance these projects via the Patriot Bond, under President Prabowo’s directive. The initial development focuses on seven cities including Bali, Yogyakarta, and Medan, with the official tender process launched on November 6, 2025. Twenty-four global companies—including Mitshubishi Heavy Industries, Veolia, and China Everbright—have passed the first round of the Selected Providers List (DPT).
Each DPT participant is required to form a consortium with local partners—either from the private sector, SOEs, or regional-owned enterprises—to promote technology transfer and strengthen national capacity in waste management. The tender will be held simultaneously across the seven pilot cities, while subsequent DPT batches will be opened to expand investor and technology provider participation. This initiative marks a major milestone in Indonesia’s clean energy transition, highlighting the significant investment potential of the WtE sector and its appeal to international technological collaboration.
