34 Waste-to-Energy Projects Target Groundbreaking in Mid-2026, Operations to Begin in 2027

Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot Tanjung stated that several Waste-to-Energy (PLTSa) projects are targeted to begin groundbreaking in mid-2026. The projects are planned to be developed in 34 regencies/cities and are expected to process up to 1,000 tons of waste per day as a solution to regional waste management challenges. The government has opened the bidding process and is optimistic that construction can begin next year, with an estimated construction period of around 1.5 to 2 years. As a result, some PLTSa facilities are expected to start operating in 2027, provided that land availability is secured.
President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that the development of waste-to-energy projects is a strategic step to address the growing waste accumulation, which has become a serious environmental threat. Beyond serving as a solution for urban waste management, the initiative is also positioned as part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen national energy security and diversify energy sources. The government views the acceleration of PLTSa implementation as a crucial momentum to establish a more integrated and sustainable waste management system in Indonesia.
