BRIN Assigned to Assess Waste Processing Technology to Support National Acceleration Efforts

BRIN attended a Limited Coordination Meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs regarding the acceleration of national waste management, following directives from the President of Indonesia during the 2026 National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas). During the meeting, BRIN, together with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek), was tasked with assessing and preparing technological innovations for waste processing, particularly Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) initiatives. The government believes that Indonesian universities already have the capacity to develop waste processing technologies at village to district levels, with capacities ranging from 50 to 200 tons per day, which can be promptly implemented to accelerate local solutions.
The acceleration efforts will initially focus on five priority areas: Bekasi City, Yogyakarta, Greater Bogor, Greater Denpasar, and Legok Nangka, before expanding to nine additional regions. The government emphasized the need for a massive and structured movement through the Aman, Sehat, Resik, dan Indah (ASRI) program, involving ministries/agencies, regional governments, schools, and universities. This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive waste management system from upstream to downstream, starting from household waste sorting to final processing, in line with the President’s directive.
