The Transportation Technology Research Center (PRTT) of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is actively promoting research to convert fuel-powered cars into electric vehicles (EVs) as part of the country’s effort to transition to clean energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. On April 21, BRIN researcher Alexander Christanto Budiman presented this innovation to 148 students at SMK Bhakti Karya Surakarta, highlighting that EVs are not only cost-efficient but also environmentally friendly, supporting national emission reduction goals.

Fellow researcher Sunarto Kaleg added that converting fuel-powered cars is more affordable than buying new EVs and allows continued use of older vehicles. The conversion process involves determining target range, performance, and cost optimization, followed by designing and installing components such as batteries, electric motors, and wiring systems.

He cited an example of converting a classic 1965 Ford Cortina MK1, which involved replacing the engine, radiator, fuel tank, and other parts, then designing battery enclosures, wiring paths, and assembling chargers, battery management systems, and more. The converted vehicle undergoes functionality tests, road trials, and certification if required by the Department of Transportation.
