The National Research and Innovation Agency’s Center for Appropriate Technology Research (PRTTG BRIN) is developing circular economy applications to manage waste from the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program through the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle. For example, banana leaf waste from pepes ikan packaging is processed into compost using biocomposter developed by PRTTG, which can be implemented at the MSME level. In addition, PRTTG also processes fish bone waste into fish bone meal to fortify snacks for children and teenagers as a source of calcium.
With the support of appropriate technology, organic waste such as banana leaves and non-organic waste such as fish bones and spines can be reused, thus reducing environmental pollution. BRIN encourages cross-sector collaboration—with local governments, village-owned enterprises (BUMDes), cooperatives, and various ministries—to strengthen the role of appropriate technology in supporting the success of the MBG program in different regions.
