The forestry and land use sector (FOLU), including peatland fires, along with the energy sector, remain the main contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Indonesia. According to the Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the Second Biennial Update Report (BUR), Indonesia’s emissions in 2016 reached 1.457 GtCO2e, with FOLU contributing 43.59% and the energy sector 36.91%. A similar trend was observed in 2019, where Land Use Change and Forestry (LUCF) accounted for 50.13%, followed by energy at 34.49%. The government stated its commitment to continue intensifying emission reduction efforts, especially in these two key sectors.

Indonesia raised its emission reduction targets in 2022 to 31.89% unconditionally and 43.20% with international support, from the initial targets of 29% and 41%. Although seen as ambitious, these targets are aligned with national development goals. As part of its emission reduction strategy, the government aims to restore 2 million hectares of peatland and rehabilitate 8.3 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. These measures are expected to curb emission surges from the FOLU sector and enhance ecosystem resilience against climate change.
