Indonesia views green hydrogen as key to achieving its Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2050, as outlined in the Enhanced-Nationally Determined Contribution (E-NDC) document. The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is promoting industrial decarbonization by substituting fossil fuels with green hydrogen, an environmentally friendly fuel produced from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro.
Indonesia has great potential for green hydrogen development due to its abundant natural resources. Several pilot projects have commenced in the first half of 2024, particularly in Sulawesi and West Java. The main challenges are developing adequate infrastructure and investing in technology to support the production, storage, and distribution of green hydrogen.
The government and the national gas industry, such as the Indonesian Industrial Gas Association (AGII), are focusing on safe and efficient technologies to support this energy transition. A roadmap is being developed to accelerate the national energy transition, with an emphasis on using local components to strengthen the domestic industry. Green hydrogen offers a solution to reduce carbon emissions and dependency on fossil fuels, with the potential to become a profitable export commodity. With the right policy support and investment, Indonesia is on the right track to achieving a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
