Implementing Sustainable Net-Zero: Chiayi City Pioneers Electric Resource Recovery Vehicles

The Chiayi City Government is advancing sustainable net-zero policies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It has enacted the "Chiayi City Net-Zero Emissions Sustainable Management Autonomy Ordinance," becoming the first city outside Taiwan's six municipalities to incorporate net-zero emissions into local regulations. In line with the National Development Council's strategies, particularly on vehicle electrification and decarbonization, the Ministry of Environmental and the Ministry of Economic Affairs has partnered with Kuozui Motors, Ltd. to pilot electric resource recovery vehicles starting May 1. The results presentation for Taiwan's first 3.5-ton electric resource recovery vehicle was held on the 21st October 2024, attended by Mayor Huang Min-hui along with Director Lai Ying-ying of the Ministry of Environment’s Resources Circulation Administration Department and other officials.

Mayor Huang emphasized the necessity of action in response to extreme climate changes, highlighting the importance of green transportation in creating a low-carbon city and achieving net-zero emissions. Chiayi City has launched the nation’s first fully electrified resource recovery vehicle route in collaboration with the Ministry of Environmental and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, aiming to reduce transportation-related carbon emissions. Mayor Huang described Chiayi as a small but beautiful city with great innovative potential, encouraging the experimentation of new products and ideas to foster a shared, livable environment for all ages and ensure a thriving community.

Director Lai expressed that promoting such plans not only enhances the safety and environmental friendliness for sanitation workers but also provides citizens with a low-noise recycling experience, contributing to environmental protection.
