The National Food Agency (NFA) continues to promote the “Stop Food Waste” campaign as a preventive effort against food waste and to instill the habit of valuing food, especially among the younger generation. According to a study by Bappenas, Indonesia generates between 23 to 48 million tons of food waste annually, making it one of the highest in the world. This waste originates from five stages of the supply chain, with consumption indentified as the critical point, contributing 5-19 million tons per year. In properly managed, this leftover food could feed up to 125 million people. Beyond economic losses, food waste also harms the environment, producing methane gas that accelerates global warming.
At the “Food Defender Training” event in Cirebon City, NFA Director of Food Vigilance, Nita Yulianis, encouraged students to become agents of change by promoting responsible food consumption behavior. She urged them to develop the habit of taking only as much food as they can eat and finishing their meals. The Cirebon City Government also supports this initiative by issuing a Mayor’s Circular on the “Save Food Movement” and launching training programs for junior high school students to become “Food Defenders.”
