The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is emphasizing energy conservation as a key aspect of the country’s energy transition. Nurcahyanto, Coordinator for Energy Conservation Technology at the Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy (EBTKE), highlighted the issuance of Government Regulation (PP) No. 33/2023 on Energy Conservation to strengthen these efforts. The regulation mandates energy management for government buildings, operational vehicles, and energy users consuming over 500 tons of CO2 equivalent. To implement these policies, the Ministry is preparing ministerial regulations and encouraging collaboration between central and local governments. As of now, 4,751 government buildings are identified as obligated to apply energy management systems. Nurcahyanto also announced partnerships with the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) and the Ministry of Home Affairs to support the program.
In 2024, the Ministry of ESDM recognized institutions excelling in energy efficiency, including Truntum Gasblok Borobudur, which achieved an impressive energy intensity of 85 kWh per square meter annually. This highlights that efficiency can be achieved without sacrificing comfort. Nurcahyanto further noted the economic potential of renewable energy and efficiency measures, urging regional governments to align their energy management activities with national strategies. Through these initiatives, the Ministry is optimistic that Indonesia can achieve sustainable and environmentally friendly energy management practices.
