Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Indonesia International Sustainability forum (IISF) 2024 Encourage Green Investments.

Updated: Sep 30

Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, delivered a keynote address on the second day of the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (IISF) on Friday, September 6, 2024. In her speech, the Foreign Minister highlighted the importance of increasing investment in the clean energy sector as a driver for sustainable economic growth.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that sustainable development is key to future prosperity. Indonesia continues to use diplomacy to advance sustainable efforts and global cooperation to achieve the SDGs and implement the Paris Agreement. “With the changing global economy, diplomacy plays a crucial role in realizing a sustainable future," Retno asserted.

The Foreign Minister outlined three main priorities that must be addressed for a sustainable future.

  • First, investing in and building green energy. This requires significant technological and financial support, including the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), which Indonesia launched during its G20 Presidency in 2022, and the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), of which Indonesia is one of the initiators.

  • Second, leveraging the vast potential of the blue economy. According to estimates, the blue economy could generate more than USD 1.5 trillion and create around 30 million jobs per year. To unlock the potential of the blue economy, Indonesia has launched the Blue Economy Roadmap 2023-2045, aimed at developing key sectors such as aquaculture and fisheries' downstream industries to ensure economic growth aligns with marine conservation efforts.

  • Third, the Foreign Minister stressed the importance of carbon absorption. The Foreign Minister explained that Indonesia has enacted a long-term strategy for low carbon and climate resilience by 2050 and a roadmap to achieve net zero emissions by 2060 or sooner.

IISF 2024 is being held at the Jakarta Convention Center from September 5 to 6, 2024, and is attended by thousands from government, private sectors, philanthropy, NGOs, experts, and academics from both domestic and international arenas. IISF serves as a platform for stakeholders to collaborate and exchange best practices in supporting decarbonization and achieving sustainable growth.
