A professor from the Faculty of Science and Data Analytics (FSAD) at ITS, Dr. Hendro Juwono MSi, has researched plastic degradation with biomass to produce biofuel as a solution to environmental and energy issues. Test results show that the resulting fuel has a Research Octane Number (RON) of 98–102, higher than conventional fuels currently available.
However, the pyrolysis process for plastic requires a temperature of 400°C, which consumes a significant amount of energy. To address this and reduce costs, Hendro mixed biomass such as Calophyllum inophyllum oil, Waste Cooking Oil (WCO), and Crude Palm Oil (CPO) with plastic waste. As a result, the required temperature decreased to 300°C, making the process more efficient and cost-effective.
This research aligns with the goals of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) points 7 and 12, with the hope of becoming a sustainable solution for plastic waste management while also meeting future energy needs.
