Starting January 2026, the Provincial Government of Bali will ban the production and distribution of plastic bottled drinking water (AMDK) under one liter in size. This policy is outlined in the Governor of Bali’s Circular Letter No. 9 of 2025 as part of efforts to preserve the environment and support the Bali Movement for a Clean and Single-Use Plastic-Free Island.
Bali Governor Wayan Koster emphasized that small plastic bottles are difficult to control and take hundreds of years to decompose, posing a serious threat to Bali’s image as a world-class tourist destination. He has given producers until December 2025 to deplete existing stock.
The policy has received support from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and environmental communities. It is expected to encourage the bottled water industry to innovate toward eco-friendly packaging or refill systems.
