The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has designated Surabaya and Batam as pilot cities for the Sustainable Energy Transition in Indonesia (SETI) program, a collaborative project with the German government funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany. Running until 2028, this project aims to establish an effective ecosystem for institutional frameworks, regulations, and energy transition financing. The program focuses on four main areas: policy development, creation of incentive and funding schemes, implementation of energy transition in key industrial sectors such as steel, textiles, pulp and paper, and industrial zones like Surabaya Industrial Estate Rungkut (SIER), as well as the adoption of clean energy and energy efficiency in urban buildings.
Director of New and Renewable Energy at ESDM, Andriah Feby Misbakhun, stated that the project aligns with President Prabowo’s directive emphasizing the importance of energy security and natural resources management to support national development. Moreover, the SETI initiative supports Indonesia’s 2021 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 43.2% by 2030 with international assistance. The energy sector is expected to contribute by reducing emissions by up to 446 million tons of CO2, through key strategies such as the implementation of renewable energy and improved energy efficiency.
